Marco- He's such a momma's boy.
Still loves to fetch but yesterday we had a 'talk' about not jumping up. Thanks for teaching him bad habits,
!!!!!!
So now he only does it to Steve. Surprised
I will be taking new pictures of him soon. He's so furry and nice on his body but his head is still fairly fuzzy but not too whiskery. Ah, well. He's my boy and will stay here.
I think it's probably important for all of us WPM people to hang onto at least one boy each, if we can, those of us that really are serious about breeding and showing them.
Since we have so few boys available (Sancho, Guiso, Marco, Kangoo, Zeke, Zeus). Each of them is pretttty special!
Can't wait to see what the Izze/Sancho pups look like. I do hope there is a nice show boy in there (who already has a home in Phoenix AZ!).

I'm looking forward to at least 365 days of no stress from anything Podengo related!!!
For a change!!!

Mary

How many females are available to have puppies ? I didn't realize there were so few males around. I am sure Marco is glad to be back with his #1 momma.

Allison,

The split pedigree book that I sent you has the males and females that are available. 7 males and 13 females, Fantasia will be in the new one that I am working on.

How many pups are expected? How many have homes already? Is the Phoenix puppy going to Matthias?

Wadaya mean by that?

Hi Allison.
Geez, I haven't been here in a long time!
As far as girls, I think there's Sissy, Daniela, Izze, Casi, Tobiana, Fantasia, Sancha, Ursa, Guincha, Hali, Maui Meela &  Mica.

In some information that was provided by a gentics expert they indicate you need 50 DIFFERENT individuals for a gene pool - to avoid the kinds of nast stuff that shows up when you do too much inbreeding.  I am searching to see where that entire article is - and will be happy to share with any that are interested.

I guess that's assuming "real life," and that there's no such thing as a "clean" gene pool in dogs. BTW, was that article specifically about dogs?
I wonder how many "different" podengos we have. I think it's safe to say we have six    :-)  but beyond that I don't know. How far back must a common ancestor be in order to say that  two dogs have "different" gene pools?
The pattern so far seems to be to breed all the bitches  to all the dogs, but it seems to me that we need to be establishing separate lines that aren't contaminated by each other. For example, in wire medios, to maintain a "de Veiros" line and a "Netherlands" line...
Does this make sense to anyone but me?

Gene pool
(Date Posted:07/05/2008 19:55 PM)

Yes the article was about dogs - the assumption was NOT that these would be 50 dogs with everything clear in their history from the beginning of time but rather by having a variety of options available - you could avoid the ever closer doubling up and re-doubling up.

I think I know where I saw the original article so as soon as I find it I'll copy for all who care to read it.

One thing that a few people did with the basenji Africans - was to have an only African line - trying to replicate the original Gene pool and to have a group of animals that were ONLY all recent African to be a resource for the breed.  Since that project there are 2 other groups of people from distinct sections of Africa that are also maintaining their regional genetic purity awaiting the potential re-opening of the stud to register these dogs in AKC.

Yeah, I guess, and Pony.
I just never think of him since his owner doesn't bother to be a part of the Medio 'family.' I guess she doesn't want to be. I know her husband is very sick but lots of us have severe health issues and we still show some effort.
I'm sure Pony is a great pet. But if she wants to play ball, she has to step up to the plate. Just owning a boy isn't enough. A mass email to say 'hi' to all of us would be a good start.
None of us is in a position to sit on a set of nards and charge someone to use them, not yet. I'm not interested in that, not yet. We can't afford that or using a dog that is so, so inbred already (mother/son and the dam died and nobody seems to know why. That is a big red flag for me). I've only ever seen one photograph of him. Got to wonder why, except maybe he's really just not good enough to publicize.

No, Not Matti and Lauren... it's a real dog show home in Phoenix. This guy has had Tervs. I told him abt visiting Tucson and seeing your dogs and he wasn't interested. Maybe he'll play ball or else be another independant splinter. I hope not (the latter).
I wish they'd try again some day but I wouldn't blame them if they didn't.

And separating the 'Dutch' lines and 'Portuguese' lines is so super silly I am going to be kept up all night smiling about it.

There is no such thing as different lines! Jose said it best once: 'WHAT bloodline?!'

They all come from the same stuff, are all made of the same stuff. Memorizing this breed (the WPM) has been the easiest thing ever. There are so few dogs.

We are all beggars at this point and can't be choosers.
At least they are super difficult dogs for most people to own and so won't be bred like crazy.

And yes, Izze is preggo...due on the 20th.
